T.J. Tauaalo talks about decision to commit to UNT

I just got off the phone with new UNT commit T.J. Tauaalo.

We are going to wait until Friday to get this into the paper since it’s so late, but here are a few key tidbits on the defensive tackle until then.

Tauaalo checks in a 6-foot-2, 290 pounds and can play either tackle position. He was a first-team all-district and honorable mention all-state pick.

He visited Houston Baptist and Utah State. Staying close to home was important to Tauaalo, who UNT has been recruiting since his junior year.

Noah Joseph recruited Tauaalo, but UNT’s soon-to-be new defensive line coach Kevin Patrick also played a key role. Patrick is still clearing the whole university approval process. He has not been officially introduced, but he made a big impression on Tauaalo, who chose UNT over offers from Utah State, UTEP, Houston Baptist and Abilene Christian.

What I found interesting (and I will go into this more in the paper) is that UNT did not offer Tauaalo until last week.

Tauaalo became a priority for UNT late.

He is coming in for an official visit this weekend, when he will be in town with key target Xavier Washington.

Be sure to see to see Friday’s edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle for more.
