Twas the final visit weekend before signing day

UNT is down to its last official visit weekend of the recruiting season. We know quite a bit about where the Mean Green stands.

With that being said, there are a few key questions to consider heading into signing day.

Does Longview Pine Tree QB/ATH Caleb Chumley end up in UNT’s class?

We reported that Chumley, a big-time prospect, would sign with UNT a couple of days ago. Then we found out we may have jumped the gun.

Derrick Hennigan, the interim head coach at Pine Tree, reiterated today that Chumley will sign with UNT, which would be a change in course from what looked like it would happen a few days ago.

Chumley is a big-time prospect who was considering UNT and Louisiana-Monroe, but had high-level BCS interest earlier in the process. We will find out here pretty quickly what will happen with Chumley, who is one of the weirder stories I have run across in recruiting the last couple of years.

Does X mark the spot?

Cedar Hill defensive end Xavier Washington has been at the top of UNT’s wish list for a long time, but Northwestern has jumped into the fray. Washington is there now. It could come to to UNT (close to home, good school, great staff, improving program) vs. Northwestern (elite academic institution, playing in the Big Ten and the Big House/at Ohio State and facing the best competition in the country, great staff) vs. Houston (close to home, recent and extended history of success, good school). That one could any of three ways.

What about the rest of UNT’s defensive line?

UNT put on a late push for Rowlett defensive tackle Cedric Johnson, who committed earlier to Louisiana Tech. I talked to Rowlett coach Doug Stephens, who said UNT still has a shot. Johnson is another high-end prospect who had BCS offers earlier in the process. Could he join UNT’s class? The Shreveport Times is reporting that Johnson will sign with Tech.

Is Elkhart running back Jeffery Wilson the cherry on top?

UNT has been after Elkhart running back Jeffery Wilson for a long time and has him in on an official visit this weekend. UNT could use a power back in its class and Wilson fits the bill. Could he land a spot late in the process? There are five teams in the running.

What about the other prospects still out there?

While they seem to be farther down the list, there are a host of other prospects out there who could still be UNT targets. Does a player like former Houston commit Inoke Ngalo, a Dallas area linebacker who is still in play and is on a visit to SMU, end up at UNT? Could he or another player we are not expecting sign with UNT?

What are the final surprises?

I can just about guarantee that there will be some surprises on signing day — guys who we expect to be in the class who are not or guys we are not expecting to be in the class who are. What will the last-minute shuffling produce? We will find out shortly.
