UNT-Charlotte running blog

Final — Charlotte wins it at the buzzer on a Terrence Williams layup on a great drive-and-dish from Pierria Henry. UNT falls 76-74.

34.5 — Charlotte has tied it up on a Terrence Williams layup. UNT has the ball coming out of a timeout. There are 28 seconds on the shot clock.

55.8 — Officials are going to the monitor to look at a ball that went out of bounds. Sure enough off Chris Jones.

1:00 — Charlotte has pulled to within 74-72 on a Denzel Ingram jumper and called a timeout. A bucket here would be huge for UNT. Jordan Williams got a layup last time down.

3:00 — UNT is up 72-68, but just turned the ball over on a travel call on Colin Voss. Charlotte will have the ball coming out of this timeout. Charlotte had a good look at a 3 the last time down and missed it. Brandan Walton has 13 for UNT.

4:17 — UNT is up 72-66 and is in a great spot to close out what would be a huge win. UNT will have the ball coming out of a timeout.

7:48 — Brandan Walton is coming up big late for UNT. He hit a jumper to stop Charlotte’s run and was just fouled shooting a 3. UNT is up 60-59 with Walton headed to the line. Walton has nine and has hit every shot he’s taken.

8:39 — Here come the 49ers. Charlotte has pulled to within 58-57. UNT is struggling against that 1-2-1 and isn’t getting the good looks it was not too long ago.

10:20 — Charlotte has scored the last three points to pull to within 58-50. UNT is struggling against a 1-2-1 and has taken a timeout to adjust.

18:28 — UNT has scored the first six points of the second half and taken a 43-40 lead. Charlotte has just called a timeout. Colin Voss has hit a couple of jumpers. Voss is a good shooter when he can get his feet set and has a good look from inside of about 18 feet. Voss now has seven to lead UNT.

Halftime — UNT is down 40-37 at the end of a pretty entertaining first half. Charlotte went on a 10-0 run late in the first half and had a seven-point lead before UNT made some key shots late. Chris Jones scored six of UNT’s last eight points of the half and had a chance to complete a three-point play late, but missed the free throw. This is the best Jones has played this season at least in games that I have seen. UNT is in a bit of foul trouble heading into the second half. Kelvin Gaines has three fouls.

3:51 — We are all tied up at 29-29 late in the first half. Keith Coleman was just called for an offensive foul. Charlotte has scored four straight. T.J. Taylor has six points for UNT. Kelvin Gaines has three fouls.

7:31 — UNT is up 25-23 after Brandan Walton hit a 3. UNT just committed a baffling turnover. Keith Coleman grabbed a loose ball on the floor and stood up. That is traveling. Maurice Aniefiok and Brandan Walton have five points each for UNT.

11:34 — UNT is down 15-13 at the second media timeout of the first half. UNT came back from seven down to tie the game up at 13-13, but gave up a layup on Charlotte’s last possession. Alzee Williams has four points for UNT. Both teams are 6-for-12 from the field so far.

13:50 — UNT is down 13-10 as as we close on the halfway point of the first half. Colin Voss is headed to the line for a couple of free throws. UNT got down 11-4, but has settled in over the last few minutes. Both teams are 5-for-9 from the floor, but Charlotte has a couple of 3s and a free throw.

I’m here in Charlotte for the UNT-Charlotte game. This is the final game on a two-game road trip that started off well with a win over Marshall.

The Mean Green played really well while knocking off the Thundering Herd. Jordan Williams had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Colin Voss and Chris Jones also had good games. Voss had 16 points last time out.

This will be a much harder game for UNT to win. Charlotte is 11-5 on the year and has won three off its last four games. Charlotte is also 6-2 at home.

Charlotte is the best team in C-USA in terms of shooting the 3 from a percentage perspective, making 38.8 of its attempts.

Charlotte is also a big team with starters that go 6-11 and 6-9 Mike Thorne Jr. and Willie Clayton, respectively. UNT will need a good game from Kelvin Gaines, who looked better than he has all season last time out while playing 16 minutes.

In an interesting side note, UNT has pulled Alzee Williams from the starting lineup and is going with Vertrail Vaughns. Alzee is UNT’s leading scorer at 12.8 points a game.
