UNT-Southern Miss running blog

Final — Southern Miss 74, UNT 64

1:01 — UNT is down 70-62 after Colin Voss scored off a rebound put-back of a Brandan Walton missed free throw. UNT will need a steal coming out of this timeout.

1:53 — UNT is down 68-60 after Jordan Williams drove the baseline for a dunk. UNT needs a steal right here.

3:02 — Southern Miss is up 64-56 and has the ball coming out of a timeout called by UNT. The Mean Green needs a stop right here.

3:57 — UNT is down 63-53 at the final media timeout and will have the ball coming out of the break. Jordan Williams and Maurice Aniefiok both have 12 points for UNT. The Mean Green needs a bucket right here to keep this interesting. Southern Miss will milk the clock every chance it gets.

7:34 — Well, that was weird. Vertrail Vaughns was called for an intentional foul on a breakaway. Officials sent the wrong Southern Miss guy to the line who made one of two. Officials huddled and wiped the free throws and sent the right guy to the line who made both. UNT is down 53-48 and was lucky when a Southern Miss guy missed a dunk.

9:24 — Maurice Aniefiok just hit a 3 to pull UNT to within 49-48. Pretty remarkable comeback by UNT since a slow start. Jordan Williams has 12 for UNT.

11:31 — Southern Miss finally hit its first shot from the field in the second half, a short on in the lane by Michael Craig. UNT is down 44-38 and is headed to the line. Jordan Williams has 12 and T.J. Taylor eight for UNT. Southern Miss missed its first 10 shots of the second half.

12:30 — UNT is on an 11-1 run and is down 42-38 as we approach the midway point of the second half. Jordan Williams has 12 points and T.J. Taylor eight for UNT. Southern Miss has gone cold and has missed all seven of its shots from the field in the second half.

15:51 — UNT is on a 7-0 run behind Jordan Williams who has seven points in the second half. UNT is down 41-34. UNT has made an adjustment against Southern Miss press, having Williams flash to the middle just behind the halfcourt line. Once he gets the ball, he is attacking the basket.

Halftime — UNT is down 39-25 at halftime here at the Super Pit. UNT is struggling offensively and is shooting just 34 percent from the field. TJ Taylor has six points to lead UNT. Southern Miss is shooting 63 percent from the floor. Deonte Houston hit a shot just before the buzzer to push Southern Miss’ lead to 14. In a side note, UNT took a look at Houston when he was at Olney Central in Illinois. UNT is shooting just 50 percent (7-for-14) from the line.

40.2 — Southern Miss just turned it over when it had what looked like a break going the other way. UNT just took a timeout down 37-25

1:06 — Southern Miss has the ball and a 35-25 lead. That was the use-it-or-lose-it 30.

3:07 — UNT made a run to get within six, but is back down 31-22 at the final media timeout of the first half. T.J. Taylor hit a 3 and has six points for UNT. Michael Craig has 11 for Southern Miss already. The Golden Eagles are shooting 57 percent from the floor. UNT has six offensive rebounds.

7:42 — UNT is down 21-13 with Southern Miss headed to the line to try to complete a three-point play. UNT was down 12, but went on a 6-0 run to close the gap. Southern Miss is still shooting the lights out at 8-for-11 and has hit two 3s. Keith Coleman and Maurice Aniefiok have four for UNT.

11:53 — UNT is down 17-7 at the second media timeout of the first half. UNT is 3-for-9 from the field. Southern Miss has hit all but one of its seven shots. What is helping matters for UNT is that Southern Miss has turned it over five times.

15:50 — This is not starting well for UNT. Southern Miss has jumped out to a 10-2 lead and Kelvin Gaines has two fouls already. UNT has three turnovers and just three shots=. Southern Miss has hit four of its five attempts, including a 3. UNT turned it over right before the first media timeout. Jordan Williams has UNT’s only bucket.

Tipoff — It looks like there will be a pretty light crowd in the stands for tonight’s game. A C-USA official is sitting above me.

The UNT men’s basketball team is about to tip its first Conference USA game here at the Super Pit and we are along for the ride on the blog as usual.

UNT will take on Southern Miss tonight.

USM might be the best team in C-USA this season. The Golden Eagles are 13-2 and are receiving votes in the Top 25 poll.

UNT has won four straight, including an impressive win over Texas A&M. The rest of UNT’s wins in its streak are against the murders row of Central Arkansas, Wayland Baptist and UC Riverside.

Long story short — UNT is 9-5, but there are still questions about how good the Mean Green is. Was that win over A&M a blip on the radar or an indication that UNT is the real deal this year?

We could have a better idea tonight.

USM is that good.

The Golden Eagles are one of the best defensive teams in the country and are allowing 62.1 points a game. USM will press UNT all night.

Alzee Williams is averaging 14.4 points a game and will be a key for UNT tonight. He will handle the ball against USM’s press most of the way, along with Chris Jones.

Tony Benford really pumped the fact that UNT is healthy and will have all of its players available as a reason for the Mean Green to be confident heading into this game.

That certainly will help matters.

Stay tuned. I will update the blog all night.
