UNT-UAB running blog

Final — UNT wins 76-65. I will be back later.

3:02 — UNT went up 10 following a 7-0 run late and has a 70-62 lead at the last media timeout. UAB is headed to the line to try to cut into the Mean Green’s advantage. Alzee Williams has 16 points for UNT.

7:32 — UNT is still up 61-58 after the quick turnaround from the UAB timeout to the media timeout. UNT drew a foul, but isn’t in the bonus yet. UAB is on a mini 6-2 run. This one looks like it will be close down the stretch here at the Super Pit.

7:49 — UNT is hanging on to a 61-58 lead as we head into the closing minutes of the second half. Robert Williams just hit a big 3 for UAB.

10:38 — UNT caught a huge break just a second ago when UAB had three looks at a chippie and missed the all. UNT is still up 57-52 and has the ball coming out of a timeout. Alzee Williams had 12 points in the first half, but has not scored in the second half.

11:59 — UAB got to within a point, but UNT has pushed its lead back to 55-50 and has the ball coming out of a timeout. TJ Taylor and Maurice Aniefiok have both hit big 3s for UNT in the second half. UNT was up seven before UAB scored to get back within five.

14:49 — UAB opened the second half on a 7-2 run. Jordan Williams broke the run with a dunk off a feed from Chris Jones. UNT is up 48-45 with Armani Flannigan headed to the line.

Halftime — UNT is up 44-38 at halftime. That is one of the better halves UNT has played in a while. Alzee Williams has 12 points. Colin Voss and Jordan Williams each have eight. UNT has battled UAB to an 18-18 deadlock on the glass, where the Blazers usually dominate. UNT shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half. UNT made it through the first half with Kelvin Gaines in foul trouble. Chad Frazier has 12 points for UAB.

54.1 — UNT has come back to take a 42-38 lead after Jordan Williams and Maurice Aniefiok hit 3s. UNT is 5-for-8 from behind the arc.

3:49 — UAB has come back from 12 down to take a 35-34 at the final media timeout of the first half. Alzee Williams has 12 points and Colin Voss eight for UNT. UNT has shot the ball really well in the first half and is sitting at 52 percent from the floor. We are looking at a 9-9 draw on the boards.

7:51 — That was a quick turnaround from the UNT timeout to the media timeout. UNT caught a break when an Alzee Williams miss bounced around and went off a UAB player. Alzee is 5-for-7 from the floor. UNT has hit just two of its last eight shots after a quick start. Colin Voss has seven points for UNT. Alzee has 12.

8:28 — Here comes UAB. The Blazers are on a 14-3 run and have pulled to within 27-26. UAB is getting some good looks in transition and is sticking them. Alzee Williams has 12 for UNT, which just took a TO.

11:25 — UNT is on a 14-2 run and is up 22-12 at the second media timeout of the first half. UNT’s zone is working really well and the Mean Green is getting to the basket. UNT has hit nine of its first 12 shots from the field. Alzee Williams has nine points already. UNT also has an 8-7 edge on the boards, where UAB is usually really good.

15:50 — UNT is down 10-8 at the first media timeout of the first half. Colin Voss has four points and is off to a good start. UNT and UAB are tied at 4-4 in rebounds, which is a good sign for UNT. Kelvin Gaines has already picked up two fouls, which isn’t going to help matters. UAB has gotten up 10 shots to five for UNT, which has two turnovers.

Tipoff Part III — TJ Taylor is making his first start of the season tonight. I have been waiting for UNT to make that move for the last couple of weeks. Taylor gives UNT a more athletic starting lineup. The drawback is it takes Alzee Williams out.

Tipoff Part II — Outgoing president Lane Rawlins is here tonight. This has to be the best student crowd of the year. The students are back in school now and have turned out.

Update tipoff — In a side note — one that we mentioned on the blog earlier and in the paper — Brandan Walton is out tonight with a concussion. That will leave UNT with a little less depth at the guard spots and one less quality outside shooter.

UNT is about to tip off its game against UAB here at the Super Pit, and once again we are along for the ride.

The Mean Green has lost three of its last four and really needs to make some hay on this two-game homestand to avoid quickly becoming an afterthought in Conference USA. UNT is 1-3 in league play and has Middle Tennessee on Saturday.

UAB is pretty darn good and is a surprising 1-2 in C-USA play after losing in overtime at MTSU and by two at home against UTEP. Those are two of the better teams in C-USA. I expect the Blazers to be out for blood tonight.

UAB is one of the nation’s best rebounding teams and ranks fourth nationally in rebounding margin at plus-11. The Blazers aren’t huge by C-USA standards, but they attack the glass.

UNT isn’t a bad rebounding team, but its post guys are not its strength. That will be the matchup to watch today. UNT needs Colin Voss to hold his own and Keith Coleman and Kelvin Gaines to give them something.

There are more students here today than I have seen in a while. There are very few people across from me in the alumni section. It’s dead in here tonight. The weather may kill attendance.

Check back, I will update the blog all night.
