The UNT men’s basketball team plays UAB at home tonight. I chatted with Alzee Williams for a few minutes about where UNT stands heading into the game in the video at the top of this blog.
UNT is 1-3 in Conference USA play, but has played well at times in league play.
The Mean Green had its game at Charlotte in its last outing all but wrapped up before it quit scoring for about the last five minutes of the game. Even then, UNT had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds.
The Mean Green also beat Marshall on the road last week for its first win in league play.
One of the keys to UNT’s hopes of turning its season around in C-USA play is Chris Jones, who is starting to find his form again after breaking his foot last year, which we wrote about in today’s paper.
Jones has been coming on of late and is just short of moving into the top 10 in UNT history in assists. He has 220 and needs 14 to tie Dominique Johnson for 10th all-time. That’s pretty impressive considering Jones has missed essentially a whole year of playing time. He was academically ineligible for the second semester of his freshman year and was hurt the second semester of last year.
And while we are on the subject of hoops, the win the UNT women posted at Florida International got lost in the shuffle a bit yesterday due to some football recruiting news with Keller Central defensive tackle T.J. Tauaalo committing to UNT.
That was a really good win for UNT. FIU has a chance to finish in the top half of the Conference USA standings this year. Briesha Wynn scored a career-high 21 points and UNT closed out a 66-59 win. UNT has really struggled to close out games this year. Getting that win was huge for UNT.
