Friday afternoon notes (Aniefiok battling ankle injury)

I swung by the UNT men’s basketball team’s practice at noon down here in Miami to pick up some material for tomorrow’s paper.

UNT pulled the first game of its two-game road trip to Florida out of the fire in the final seconds when Chris Jones hit a runner in the lane to lift the Mean Green to a 65-63 win over Florida International.

UNT will play at Florida Atlantic tomorrow. What remains to be seen is how much Maurice Aniefiok will play. The sophomore played just three minutes against FIU due to a sprained ankle.

Coach Tony Benford said he didn’t like the way Aniefiok was moving (or wasn’t) against FIU.

We will have to wait and see how much he plays against FAU.

UNT is 4-8 in conference play. If things work out tomorrow, UNT could be in a good spot to earn a bye in the conference tournament.

The UNT women stunned UTEP in their last game and are now 5-7 in league play and are sitting eighth in the conference standings heading into a few winnable games. UNT heads to Tulsa, which is 4-8 in conference play, tomorrow.
