UNT-ECU running blog

Final — UNT 53-51. Chris Jones grabbed a terrible pop fly of a pass at midcourt. UNT is out of the basement in C-USA.

0.7 — Chris Jones made one of two from the line. It’s UNT 53-51. ECU has the ball from its baseline.

0.9 — UNT turned it over again, but ECU drove it into the lane and missed twice, the second time from the corner.

49.7 — That didn’t go so well for UNT on the out of bounds play. UNT turned it over. ECU stuck a 3. 52-51 unt

1:00 — UNT is going to hang on. ECU just fouled with eight seconds left on the shot clock, which was not smart.

1:26 — UNT is still hanging on. ECU hit a couple of free throws to pull within 52-48. UNT just can’t turn it over.

3:14 — UNT is still up 52-46, but just turned the ball over. ECU had a good look at a 3 on its last possession and missed it. That ball went halfway down before coming out in a great break for the Mean Green. ECU will be looking for another look at it this trip. Vertrail Vaughns has 13 points for UNT.

4:05 — UNT is up 52-46. Alzee Williams turned a turnover into a dunk for UNT. Those are his first two points of the game.

6:36 — UNT just dodged a bullet the last couple of minutes. Caleb White had a clean look at a 3 and left it short. UNT ran the shot clock down to 3 before drawing a foul. Vertrail Vaughns has 13 for UNT and is still the only player the Mean Green has in double figures.

7:33 — Well, that turned quickly. ECU is on an 8-0 run behind a pair of 3s from Caleb White. UNT is up 50-46.

9:24 — UNT is up 47-38 as we head down the stretch in the second half. UNT went on a 10-0 run capped by a Keith Coleman putback dunk (yeah, you just read that) to go up 11. ECU scored a bucket, but it appears as if UNT has this one in hand.

10:53 — It looks like UNT is going to get off the schneid here at the Super Pit. UNT is up 45-36 after TJ Taylor and Vertrail Vaughns hit back-to-back 3s. UNT is on an 8-0 run. Vaughns has 13 points for UNT. Chris Jones and Colin Voss both have eight. ECU is 4-for-16 from 3.

15:25 — UNT is up 34-32 at the first media timeout of the second half. Colin Voss has UNT’s last four points and has six for the game. Vertrail Vaughns and Chris Jones both have eight points for UNT. The Mean Green has a 23-17 edge on the glass, which is helping matters.

Halftime — UNT is up 28-27 at halftime here at the Super Pit. UNT led by as many as six in the first half, but ECU got going late in the half. Vertrail Vaughns and Chris Jones both have eight points for UNT. ECU is shooting 47 percent to 39 percent for UNT. ECU went on a 9-2 run late in the first half. UNT isn’t getting much out of some of its key scorers. Jordan Williams (1-for-6) has two points. Maurice Aniefiok and Alzee Williams are both scoreless.

1:26 — ECU has come back to tie this one up at 26-26 and grabbed a loose ball before calling a timout. ECU is on a 10-2 run.

3:52 — UNT is up 24-19 at the final media timeout of the first half. Chris Jones and Vertrail Vaughns both have eight points for UNT. The Mean Green is 4-for-4 from the line. UNT has a 14-10 edge on the glass.

7:34 — UNT is up 20-16 after going on a 12-2 run. Vertrail Vaughns has really given UNT a spark and has eight points, including two 3s. Chris Jones has six points for UNT. The Mean Green also has a 11-7 edge on the glass. The environment at tonight’s game is pretty good with all of the kids in the house.

11:44 — We are all tied up at 12-12 at the second media timeout of the first half. UNT has scored the last four points. Chris Jones has six points for UNT. The Mean Green is shooting just 38 percent from the field, but has a 9-5 edge on the glass. ECU is 2-for-4 from 3-point range.

15:50 — UNT is down 7-6 at the first media timeout of the first half. Chris Jones has four points for UNT on a couple of pull-up jumpers. ECU has only gotten off two 3s and hit one. UNT has to chase ECU off that line tonight. The Pirates can really shoot it from deep. UNT has a 4-3 edge on the glass. That should be a spot UNT can excel in this game.

6:46 — In a fun side note, I was walking late this afternoon and two truck loads of ECU fans were in the Pit parking lot tailgating. I asked and they are all East Carolina transplants. They had ECU flags flying. Turns out that ECU grad and Cowboys wide receiver Dwayne Harris stopped by to talk to the Pirates while they were in town. Found that one out while chatting with the ECU broadcast crew.

UNT is about to take on East Carolina here at the Super Pit in a battle to get out of last place in the Conference USA standings. Four teams are at the very bottom at 2-8. UNT and ECU are two of them.

UNT has lost five straight, including the first game in this two-game home stand 72-62 to Old Dominion

On the bright side, if UNT wins this game, it will equal last season’s win total of 12.

UNT came out of its late-season funk defensively last game after giving up 90 in two of its last three. UNT didn’t play nearly as much zone in that game as it had in its last few.

What makes this matchup interesting is that the one thing ECU does well is score. The Pirates rank second in C-USA in scoring at 75.8 points a game. Akeem Richmond ranks first nationally with an average of 4.6 3s a game.

Another item to keep a watch on is Alzee Williams’ pursuit of 1,000 career points. Al needs seven more to get there. Jordan Williams is also closing in on the mark and should get there in a couple of games.

The Super Pit was pretty dead last game. UNT has a promotion going tonight and has several sections filling up with DISD grade schoolers.

Check back, I will update the blog all night.
