UNT-FAU running blog

Final — UNT 78-76. FAU threw one up at the buzzer that went in. I will be back later.

1.0 — Marquan Botley had a good look at a corner 3 that went halfway down before coming out.

5.8 — FAU got the ball into the frontcourt and didn’t get the look it wanted. FAU called a timeout to set something up. I’m sure the Owls will get the ball to Pablo Bertone if it has a chance.

16.1 — UNT got the ball in and got it to Vertrail Vaughns, who hit both free throws. FAU will need a 3 here to send it to overtime. UNT has played four overtime periods here over the last couple of years. I’m just saying. UNT just called a timeout after it saw the way FAU set up on the in-bounds play.

25.8 — 74-73 UNT. TO FAU. The Owls just hit a bank 3 from the top of the key and will look for a steal here. Marquan Botley hit the shot for FAU.

2:47 — UNT is hanging on here at FAU late. It’s 72-66 UNT. FAU with have the ball coming out of the final media timeout. A stop here would put UNT in a really good spot.

4:25 — FAU is making a run here late. It’s 68-64 UNT. The Mean Green just called a timeout.

7:33 — UNT is up 66-58 as we head down the stretch in the second half. Jordan Williams has 19 points for UNT. FAU has scored its last six points from the free-throw line. Pablo Bertone has 22 for FAU.

10:55 — UNT has built a 60-52 lead late in the second half. Kelvin Gaines just dropped in a shot in the lane. UNT has done a better job defensively on FAU’s key scorers in the second half, including Pablo Bertone.

14:09 — UNT is on a 6-0 run and has taken a 52-46 lead early in the second half. Maurice Aniefiok hit a 3 that led Mike Jarvis to call a timeout. Aniefiok has six points for UNT.

Halftime — UNT is down 41-36 at halftime here in Florida. UNT was down as many as nine in t he first half. Brandan Walton hit a huge corner 3 at the halftime buzzer to give UNT a little momentum heading into the half. UNT has hit a few bit 3s in the opening half. Maurice Aniefiok hit another one late in the half.

3:04 — UNT is down 36-30. FAU will have the ball coming out of the timeout after Kelvin Gaines was called for setting a moving screen. Jordan Williams has 13 points for UNT. Pablo Bertone has 16 for FAU. Chris Jones has six.

7:44 — UNT is down 36-21 at the third media timeout of the first half. FAU is on a 5-0 run. Pablo Bertone is as good as advertised. FAU’s starting guard has 10 points already. He’s from Argentina.

8:37 — UNT is down 24-21 at the third media timeout of the first half. Marquan Botley hit a 3 to put FAU up three after UNT had tied it up with a 7-0 run. Botley is from Plano Prestonwood Christian, by the way.

15:43 — UNT is down 12-10 at the first media timeout. Jordan Williams is a groove and has hit two 3s already. They weren’t particularly easy looks either. FAU is headed to the line for a couple of free throws.

UNT was assessed a technical for dunking in warmups. FIU hit one of the two shots and is up 1-0 before we start. Remember that one.

Tipoff — UNT starters — Alzee Williams, Armani Flannigan, Chris Jones, Jordan Williams and Colin Voss

6 p.m. — The FAU band is playing the instrumental version of Wrecking Ball. A little Miley Cyrus. Just thought you guys should know that.

UNT is about to tip off its game against Florida Atlantic here in Boca Raton and once again we are here to do a little blogging along the way.

UNT has won squeakers in its last two, edging both Florida International and East Carolina by two.

The Mean Green can sneak over the .500 mark with a win today. UNT is 13-13 on the season.

Jordan Williams and Alzee Williams are both playing well of late and are averaging 12.2 and 11.6 points a game, respectively.

FAU has some big guards who can shoot the ball. Pablo Bertone is averaging 18.3 points a game and is 6-4.

Maurice Aniefiok is warming up and could be a factor tonight. He has been limited by a sprained ankle. His return would give UNT some extra shooting and make UNT a little more athletic.

I will update the blog all night. Check back for more.
