UNT-UTEP running blog

Final — UNT pulls off the stunner, 73-64. I will be back later.

3:23 — UNT is up 64-58 and is holding up pretty well late. Eboniey Jeter has 17 points for UNT. Alexis Hyder, Desiree Nelson and Briesha Wynn all have 12 for UNT. As long as UNT doesn’t really choke down the stretch, it’s in good shape.

5:18 — UNT is up 63-55 late in the second half.

6:23 — UTEP pulled to within six before Hannah Christian and Desiree Nelson hit big shots. UTEP has answered. It’s 61-53 UNT.

7:47 — UNT continues to hang in there as we head down the stretch at the Super Pit. UNT is up 57-48, but has committed a couple of turnovers in the face of cranked up defensive pressure. Eboniey Jeter has 16 points for UNT and is one of four Mean Green players in double figures.

12:03 — It’s looking more and more like UNT is going to pull this off. Eboniey Jeter has scored UNT’s last four points and the Mean Green has a 51-37 lead. UTEP just called a timeout. Briesha Wynn and Jeter both have 12 points. Alexis Hyder has 10 and was limping coming down the floor.

15:19 — That was a quick turnaround. UNT was forced to call a timeout to maintain possession. UNT iis up 47-33. This is getting pretty close to being comfortable for UNT. Alexis Hyder has 10 points now for UNT.

15:46 — UNT is up 45-33 at the first media timeout of the second half. UTEP opened the second half on a 5-1 run, but UNT has answered and looks pretty confident Briesha Wynn has 12 points for UNT.

Halftime — In a bit — OK a huge — stunner here at the Super Pit, UNT is up 39-28 on UTEP at halftime. The Miners are one of the elite teams in Conference USA. Briesha Wynn has 12 points and Alexis Hyder 10 at halftime. UNT was down four before going on a huge 16-0 run that has completely changed this game (16-0 run usually do that). UNT was up by as many as 14 in the first half.

3:10 — UNT is on a whopping 16-0 run and is up 34-22 late in the first half. Alexis Hyder has 10 points for UNT, which is playing some of the best basketball it has played all season. UTEP is really struggling against UNT’s zone.

5:24 — UNT is up 26-22 after Desiree Nelson hit a baseline jumper. UTEP took a 30 TO.

6:27 — UNT is up 24-22 and in the middle of a 6-0 run. UNT just took its 30 second timeout. It will be interesting to see what UNT does right here defensively.

7:55 — UNT is down 22-20 with Eboniey Jeter headed to the line to try to complete a 3-point play. Janis Peterson has six points to lead UNT. The Mean Green keeps hanging in there.

11:37 — UNT is down 17-13 and is hanging in there against UTEP. Janis Peterson has six points on two absolute bombs from about Pilot Point. UNT is only shooting 35 percent from the floor, but has seven points off turnovers. UNT has four steals.

15:48 — UNT is down 9-6 at the first media timeout with UTEP headed to the line to try to convert its second 3-point play. Alexis Hyder and Janis Peterson both have three points for UNT on 3s. UNT has taken two of its seven shots from behind the arc.

The UNT women are about to take on UTEP here at the Super Pit and once again, we are along for the ride.

UTEP is one of the elite teams in Conference USA and comes in with a 20-4 record, including a 9-2 mark in league play.

UNT (10-14, 4-6) lost its last game against East Carolina and is quickly running out of players.

To review:

Acheil Tac (8.3 PPG), Candice Adams (6.2 PPG), BreAnna Dawkins (6.5 PPG) and Joh’Vonna Darrington (3.3 PPG) are all gone for the year — toast — due to a variety of injuries.

UNT just lost Tac and Adams and will look to regroup with a few veteran players leading the way, including Briesha Wynn, Alexis Hyder and Laura McCoy.Wynn is averaging 11.0 points a game.

That could be tough to do tonight.

UTEP is huge and deep. Senior Kayla Thornton is averaging 19.7 points a game and is one of the better players in the league.

Stay tuned. I will update the blog all night.
