UNT-UTSA running blog

Final — UNT pulls away late for a 71-62 win over UTSA, tying its season-high for consecutive wins at four. Jordan Williams led UNT with 14. I will be back later.

1:11 — UNT is up 66-62. UTSA just scored and took a timeout. Chris Jones missed the front end of a one-and-one before that.

2:00 — TJ Taylor might have hit the big dagger to finish this one off, a 3. UNT is up 66-60.

2:29 — UNT is up 63-58 and has the ball with :16 left on the shot clock. UTSA hasn’t hit from the field since scoring to go up 55-53. That was a long, long time ago.

3:48 — UNT is up 63-57 at the final media timeout of the second half. UTSA is headed to the line for a pair of free throws. The big run UNT put together late looks like it will be enough for the Mean Green to hang on here. Brandan Walton and Jordan Williams both have 13 points for UNT.

7:06 — It looks like UNT is starting to pull away here in San Antonio. UNT is on an 8-2 run and is up 60-55 with TJ Taylor headed to the line to try to complete a three-point play. Maurice Aniefiok and Jordan Williams have hit big 3s to get UNT going the last few minutes.

11:46 — UNT is down 49-45. UNT got within four, but UTSA answered by sticking a 3. Jordan Williams has 10 points for UNT now. UTSA is shooting 54 percent from the field.

15:44 — Jordan Williams scored his 1,000th point early in the second half on a steal and a dunk. UNT pulled to within two, but UTSA answered with a 7-2 run. Alzee Williams just converted a 3-point play to pull UNT to within 39-35.

Halftime — UNT is down 32-24 at halftime. UTSA led by as many as 10 and had a chance to get back to that figure late, but turned it over with a chance to take the last shot. Brandan Walton has seven points for UNT, which is shooting just 34.8 percent from the field. UTSA is shooting 48.1 percent. UNT has turned it over six times so far. Not bad. UNT just isn’t shooting the ball well. Colin Voss and Alzee Williams are scoreless.

3:51 — UNT has pulled to within 27-21 at the final media timeout of the first half on a TJ Taylor layup. Brandan Walton still leads UNT with seven points. UNT caught a break on a 50-50 call that could have been a foul on a push or Walton just losing his balance trying to save a ball going out of bounds.

4:47 — UTSA is on a 10-1 run and has opened up a 27-19 lead late in the first half. UNT hasn’t hit a field goal since Kelvin Gaines scored to make it 16-12 UNT. TO UNT.

7:46 — We are all tied up at 18-18 at the third media timeout of the first half. UTSA is on a 4-0 run. UNT has gone a little cold offensively the last few minutes. Brandan Walton has seven points for UNT.

11:46 — UNT is down 12-11 at the second media timeout of the first half. Kelvin Gaines was just called for goal tending, which gave UTSA the go-ahead bucket after UNT had taken the lead. No one has more than two points for UNT.

15:27 — UNT got the ball in to Keith Coleman deep on its possession out of the timeout. Coleman missed the dunk, but was fouled. He will have a couple of free throws coming out of the timeout. That is usually an adventure. Coleman is shooting 35 percent from the line.

15:44 — UNT is down 9-6 and just took a timeout. UNT led 4-0 early before UTSA went on a 7-0 run. Armani Flannigan scored in the post on a good move. Another sign of his development.

Tip — Starters: Flannigan, Jones, Voss, J. Williams, A. Williams

I have made the trek to San Antonio for the UNT-UTSA game here at the Convocation Center.

UNT has won three straight games, all by two points to sneak over the .500 mark at 14-13. UNT, which is 5-8 in league play, is still holding out hope that it can grab a bye in the Conference USA tournament.

This is a key game for UNT for that reason, not to mention that the UNT-UTSA series is quickly becoming something of a rivalry. UTSA has beaten UNT in football and women’s basketball this year. A UTSA win tonight would give the Roadrunners a clean sweep of the Big Three.

UTSA also whacked UNT in volleyball.

UNT did beat UTSA in soccer (Trust in the remaining John now that Johnny Jones is down at LSU).

UTSA has lost six of its last seven games. Its only win in that span came against Florida Atlantic, another C-USA bottom-feeder.

The interesting storyline today is that Jordan Williams needs just four more points to hit the 1,000-point mark. Alzee Williams got there earlier this year. Once Jordan Williams tallies his 1,000th point he and Alzee Wiliams will become the first teammates to reach that milestone in the same season were future UNT Hall of Famers Josh White and Tristan Thompson.

There is a pretty sizable batch of UNT fans who have made the trip down, including Rick Villarreal. There are about a dozen people in green across the way.

Stay tuned. I will update the blog all night.
