Former UNT head coach Karen Aston (for all of about 5 minutes) has led Texas to the NCAA tournament.

Texas will face Pennsylvania in the opening round. Here is the bracket on ESPN.

Aston is a good coach and nearly led UNT out of the wilderness in her one season in the 2011-12 campaign, when UNT nearly broke through for at least a .500 finish, going 15-16. The Mean Green has now suffered through seven straight losing seasons.

The Mean Green appears to be on the verge of ending that streak under Mike Petersen, whose team finished 12-18 during an injury-plagued year while making the move up to Conference USA.

It was a tough year for UNT’s new league.

The only team to make the women’s tournament was Middle Tennessee, which is ranked No. 22 nationally, but only received a No. 8 seed. Do the math, and that seems about four or five seed slots too low.

Tulsa made the men’s field and was seeded 13th.

The Louisiana-Lafayette men made the field from the Sun Belt — UNT’s old league — and was seeded 14th.
