Saturday night notes (Jones will be OK, UNT wins in soccer, softball)

North Texas point guard Chris Jones should be ready to play in the Conference USA tournament on Tuesday when the Mean Green faces Rice in an opening-round game. (Denton Record-Chronicle/David Minton )

UNT will open play in the Conference USA tournament on Tuesday.

The good news is that Chris Jones will be ready to go for UNT. The junior point guard didn’t practice today due to a sprained ankle, but should be ready to go when UNT faces Rice in the opening round, coach Tony Benford said today.

I will delve more into the matchup over the next couple of days. It’s pretty clear to anyone who has watched UNT play that the Mean Green is a whole lot better off if Jones can play and free up Alzee Williams to play off the ball and score.

And while we are on the topic of hoops (late-night add), Trey Dickerson, a JUCO point guard UNT was recruiting, committed to Iowa.

There is nothing going on tonight in UNT sports, but two teams were in action this afternoon.

The UNT soccer team beat Oklahoma. Yeah, it’s only a spring game, but it’s still a big win.

Not that we didn’t already know this considering UNT has never had a losing season in soccer, but the Mean Green will be pretty salty again next year.

And in other news, the UNT softball team swept its first two games in Conference USA play, taking out Middle Tennessee 5-1 and 8-1.
