Saturday night notes, thoughts (UNT splits in softball)

It’s Saturday night and time for a few notes of interest in the land of the Mean and the Green.

The UNT softball team split a doubleheader with rival UTSA today. Ashley Kirk threw a one-hitter in the opener, which UNT won 3-0 before UTSA came back to win the second game 10-6.

UNT’s pitchers behind Kirk were whacked around a bit.

The third game of the series will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.

UNT was out of the picture for the headline events of the day, the Conference USA basketball tournament title games.

Tulsa won the men’s title over Louisiana Tech 69-60. Bill Haisten from the Tulsa World has the story.

It is a bit of a kick for the rest of the teams in the league that Tulsa, which is leaving for the American Athletic Conference won the title on its way out the door.

On the women’s side, Middle Tennessee hammered Southern Miss 84-55. MTSU earned its 12th straight trip to the NCAAs and is ranked 22nd nationally. Our friend Adam Sparks from the Daily News-Journal has that one covered.

MTSU winning wasn’t exactly a huge surprise.

Everyone saw that coming.
