The NCAA and NIT tournament brackets are out.
UNT isn’t headed to the postseason this year. The Mean Green finished 16-16, but there are some juicy UNT-related angles.
SMU captured the attention of the Dallas area sports community with a breakout season under Larry Brown, but was passed over when it came time for the NCAA tournament.
Needless to say, UNT fans are generally thrilled.
A few have made the point that SMU has gotten more positive publicity out of a good season that will continue in the NIT than UNT ever did while going to two NCAA tournaments. I would have to disagree. UNT got a huge bump locally out of its first of two recent NCAA bids in 2007.
The other interesting tie is that former UNT head coach Johnny Jones led LSU to an NIT bid in what could be seen as another step forward for the future UNT Hall of Famer. LSU will play San Francisco on Wednesday.
What could be really juicy is if LSU wins, it could face SMU in the second round.
That means that LSU and Jones could end up playing in Dallas.
Just something to think about.
