UNT-Southern Miss running blog

Final — UNT falls 80-77. I will be back later.

46.9 — UNT is up 77-76 after Briesha Wynn scored in transition. Southern Miss had a 1-point lead up until that point. Timeout Southern Miss.

2:25 — UNT has turned it over twice against the press. Southern Miss scored both times. We are all tied up at 70-70.

2:42 — UNT is up 70-66 after Southern Miss hit a 3 and called a timeout.

3:53 — UNT is on a 13-3 run and has regained a 67-61 lead late in the second half here at the Super Pit. Alexis Hyder has 23 points for UNT, which also has 17 from Janis Peterson. All of UNT’s points have come from its starters. Don’t see that very often. Peterson is headed to the line.

7:25 — UNT is down 58-54 at the third media timeout of the second half and hasn’t scored since Alexis Hyder hit a layup to put the Mean Green up 54-41. UNT is headed to the line, where Briesha Wynn will have a couple of shots.

9:59 — Southern Miss is on a 15-0 run and has a 56-54 lead. TO UNT.

10:57 — Here comes Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are on a 7-0 run. TO UNT. UNT 54-48.

11:47 — UNT is still hanging on to a double-digit lead here in the second half of its game against Southern Miss. Alexis Hyder has 19 points for UNT and has really gotten rolling here in the second half. Laura McCoy and Janis Petersen have 12 and 10 points, respectively, for UNT.

15:31 — UNT is up 45-36 at the first media timeout of the second half. Southern Miss is headed to the line to try to complete a three-point play. This is one of the more complete games UNT has played in a while.

16:12 — UNT is up 45-34 after going on a 10-2 run over the last few minutes to stretch a five-point halftime edge. Laura McCoy has 12 points, while Alexis Hyder and Janis Peterson both have 10. UNT is on a roll and looks pretty confident.

Halftime — UNT is up 35-30 at halftime after Laura McCoy put on a shooting display in the first half. McCoy is 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. UNT cooled off a bit offensively late in the first half, but is still shooting 44 percent from the field. UNT is just 3-for-9 from the line. If UNT was shooting it a bit better from there, it would have bit more breathing room. Southern Miss has missed all five of its 3-point attempts, which is helping UNT’s cause.

3:47 — UNT is up 32-26 at the final media timeout of the first half. Laura McCoy and Briesha Wynn both have nine points for UNT. McCoy hit two of her 3s in the last few minutes to push UNT’s lead out a bit. UNT is still lighting it up at 57.1 percent from the field. UNT is 5-for-7 from 3.

7:17 — UNT is on a 7-0 run and is up 25-20 a little past the midway point of the first half. Briesha Wynn has eight points for UNT. UNT is shooting 58 percent.

11:16 — UNT is up 18-16 as we near the halfway point of the first half. Briesha Wynn has five points for UNT, which is 7-for-11 from the field. UNT has two 3s already.

12:34 — Laura McCoy just hit her first 3 of the game to put UNT up 16-14. Southern Miss took a quick 30-second timeout.

13:33 — UNT is down 14-13 and has just taken a quick timeout.

15:06 — UNT and Southern Miss are all tied up at 10-10 at the first media timeout of the first half. Janis Peterson has five points for UNT. Both teams are 4-for-6 from the field. Southern Miss had an 8-5 lead before Peterson hit a 3.

Welp, we have reached the final game of the regular season for the UNT women’s basketball team and the end of the careers of a few players on the roster.

UNT will finish out with Southern Miss tonight in the last home game for Laura McCoy, Desiree Nelson and Hannah Christian.

Nelson has cleared the 500-point mark at 506, while McCoy ranks second in UNT history with 160 3s. Christian hasn’t been around very long, but has played a key role as a backup point guard.

McCoy has carved out her niche in program history and she is a good quote. The Blonde Bomber is one of those players I have a lot of respect for. Being a good talker carries a lot of weight with me for obvious reasons.

I don’t think it’s a big stretch to say that there are a lot of UNT fans who would like to see Nelson, and especially McCoy, go out on a good note. It’s been a tough, injury-filled season for UNT, which can establish an easier path in the conference tournament.

That won’t be easy to do tonight against Southern Miss, which is 23-5.

A win tonight would give UNT a shot at earning a bye in the conference tournament.

Stay tuned. I will update the blog all night.
