UNT-Tulsa running blog

Final — UNT falls 79-68. I will be back later.

1:37 — UNT is down 69-61 and just took a timeout. UNT needs a miracle here.

3:10 — UNT is in trouble at the final media timeout. Tulsa is up 65-59. Kelvin Gaines and Colin Voss have both fouled out. Alzee Williams has 16 and Brandan Walton 15 for UNT. Tulsa has scored the last four points and is headed to the line. Chris Jones has only played seven minutes, which has not helped UNT. Williams has hand to handle the ball quite a bit.

7:33 — UNT is down 60-54 at the third media timeout of the second half. Alzee Williams has 16 and Brandan Walton 12. Walton just picked up an offensive foul with some pretty good defense.

7:51 — Tulsa is on a 6-0 run and is up 60-54. UNT just took a timeout. Alzee Williams went down with an injury. That makes three so far.

10:27 — UNT has a chance to tie this up at the line with Vertrail Vaughns headed to the line, where he is pretty automatic. UNT is down 54-52. UNT is on a 12-5 run since Tulsa went up nine. Alzee Williams has 16 points for UNT.

11:14 — UNT has pulled to within 53-50 midway through the second half and has Alzee Williams headed to the line. Brandan Walton just hit a huge 3. Williams has 14 points, while Walton has 12. Jordan Williams also hit a big 3 for UNT in the last few minutes.

15:16 — UNT has pulled within 43-40 at the first media timeout of the second half. Alzee Williams is having a big game with 14 points. UNT is on a 5-0 run, all on points from Williams. Chris Jones has tied Dominique Johnson with 120 assists in a season, the top total for a UNT player since the 1998-99 season when Calvin Williams has 12.

Halftime — UNT is down 37-31 at halftime and is playing a whole lot better than it did in the first meeting between these teams. Brandan Walton and Alzee Williams both have nine points for UNT. We are all even at 18 each on rebounds. The difference is Tulsa shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the first half, while UNT shot 35.5 percent (11-for-31). Tulsa is shooting just 50 percent from the line at 7-for-14. Tulsa has a 12-6 edge in points in the paint.

20.9 — UNT turned the ball over. Tulsa has a chance to set up the last shot of the half here.

50.2 — UNT is down 37-31 and just took a timeout to set something up.

3:21 — UNT is down 35-31 at the final media timeout of the first half. Alzee Williams and Brandan Walton both have nine points for UNT. Tulsa is shooting 56 percent from the field. It looks like both Walton and Chris Jones will be back after going down with injuries earlier in the half.

7:28 — Now Brandan Walton is down. It looks like he might have gotten hit in the head. He brought his hands up to his face and went to the floor. UNT has pulled to within 26-24 with a 5-0 run. Walton is up. I don’t think he has any idea where he is.

8:33 — Chris Jones is down on the floor and is grabbing his right knee. This does not look good. You can hear a pin drop in here. Trainers are on the floor and looking at Jones. He is up now.

11:54 — Tulsa is up 18-13 at the second media timeout of the first half. Brandan Walton has five points to lead UNT. Tulsa is shooting 54 percent from the field. UNT has an 8-6 rebounding edge. UNT has hit both of its 3-point attempts.

15:53 — It looks like UNT will be more competitive tonight. Tulsa is up 11-8, but UNT is hanging in there. UNT trailed by as many as six, but Brandan Walton hit a big 3. Tulsa has hit four of its first five shots from the field. UNT also has a 4-2 edge in rebounds, which is a big change from the first time these teams played.

UNT is about to tip off its regular season finale against Tulsa here at the Super Pit. I am on hand to do a little blogging along the way.

This is a big game for both teams.

UNT has a chance to earn a bye in the Conference USA tournament with a win and some help. Tulsa has a chance to win a share of the conference title.

UNT was whacked at Tulsa by 31 earlier this season and will look for revenge tonight.

The key could be how UNT plays down low. Tulsa finished with a plus-17 rebounding margin in the first meeting of these teams and generally controlled the paint. UNT’s big men have really struggled of late and could be in for a big challenge tonight.

Tulsa is going to be highly motivated for this game, which could help negate some of the Mean Green’s senior night mojo. UNT is honoring Brandan Walton, Vertrail Vaughns and one of the top scorers in school history in Alzee Williams before tonight’s game.

Tulsa has a pretty big crowd on hand. UNT won’t be outnumbered in terms of fans, but it might be pretty even.

Check back. I will update the blog all night.
