Wednesday night notes, thoughts

While most of the attention of the college sports world was focused on the beginning of the NCAA tournament tonight, there were a couple of items of interest in or related to UNT athletics:

– The UNT softball team played pretty well at Texas Tech tonight, but ended up being swept in a doubleheader 5-1 and 5-4. Brooke Foster went 3-for-4 with a home run in the second game. UNT will continue its trip west with a key Conference USA series at UTEP this weekend.

– And while it isn’t directly UNT related, Johnny Jones is headed back to town — sort of. LSU beat San Francisco on the road in the opening round of the NIT tonight 71-63. The Tigers advanced to face SMU at 8 p.m. on Monday at Moody Coliseum. The future UNT Hall of Famer has led LSU to a 20-win season in his second year in Baton Rouge. It’s LSU’s first 20-win campaign since the 2008-09 season, which was also the last time LSU won a postseason game. It will be interesting to see how many Mean Green fans show up to cheer for the future UNT Hall of Famer against a school the school’s fans despise above all others.
