Breaking news — UNT lands JUCO forward

UNT has picked up a commitment from JUCO forward Muhammed Ahmed of Gillette College in Wyoming.

Ahmed averaged 17.6 points and 7.0 rebounds a game last season.

Ahmed is 6-foot-7 and will fill the open scholarship UNT had once Kelvin Gaines elected to leave the school and turn pro.

Ahmed was named to the All-Region IX team last season and seems to fit the profile of what UNT is looking for in terms of athletic guys who can run the floor, defend and score.

The point was made to me, and there is a lot of truth to it, that the best teams in Conference USA didn’t necessarily have a dominant post player last season. Most of the top teams in the league had forwards who were quicker and could get up and down the floor.

I hope to get the coach at Gillette on the phone and then talk to Ahmed.
