Nafees Lyon didn’t expect a college from all the way across the country to come into play when he began looking for a place to continue his football career.
Now UNT might be out of Lyon’s plans as quickly as the school came in just a few months ago.’
Lyon attended U.S. Army All-American Combine in San Antonio earlier this year, where he struck up a friendship with DeSoto offensive lineman and UNT recruiting target Dominique Henry.
That friendship led to former UNT cornerbacks coach Ryan Walters getting a hold of the Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek cornerback’s film.
“Dominique hooked me up,” Lyon said. “Coach Walters ended up offering me. It was my second offer.”
Walters has since left UNT for Memphis.
That appears as if it might be the end of the road as far as UNT’s recruitment of Lyon, who has not heard from the school’s coaches recently and didn’t know that Walters had left the school.
Lyon could end up playing against UNT in Conference USA. The 5-foot-10, 173 pound cornerback has offers from Marshall, Charlotte and Miami (Ohio) out of the MAC. North Carolina and North Carolina State are also recruiting Lyon, but have yet to offer him a scholarship.
“I want to get it done before the season starts,” Lyon said. “It’s a matter of where I fit in and how the coaches treat me. My parents want me to stay close to home, but I want to go somewhere I will fit in.”
