Sunday night notes and thoughts (tough day softball, golf tourney underway)

The UNT softball team had a tough weekend down in Florida in a key series against Florida International.

The Mean Green lost all three games to the Golden Panthers by a combined score of 24-3.

FIU completed the sweep with a 10-2 win today.

We don’t travel with the softball team, but UNT did include a quote in its story on the game

“I’m highly disappointed in the way we played this weekend,” UNT coach Tracey Kee said. “I do not feel like we executed on the pitching mound as a staff nor do I feel our offense was able to find a rhythm.”

The real issue is that UNT fell to 12-8 in Conference USA play heading into its final series of the regular season, which just so happens to be against Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane is 18-2 in conference play.

Here what makes UNT’s position particularly precarious — FIU, East Carolina and Florida Atlantic are all 12-9. UAB is 13-7 and has already sweep UNT.

UNT needed to pick up wins in its final two series before the conference tournament to maintain its position near the top of the conference standings.

UNT’s first chance to do just that went out the window this weekend. Capitalizing on its second chance this weekend at home against Tulsa isn’t going to be easy.

UNT is in third place now, but could take a tumble if it is can’t produce this weekend.

And in other news, the UNT men’s golf team is in sixth place out of 14 teams in the Conference USA tournament at 296. Nick Rodriguez shot a 72 and is tied for 10th place.

Tulsa leads at 288, two shots ahead of UAB, the pre-tournament favorite.
