Tuesday night notes (Mac tops coaching rankings, recruiting tidbits, et cetera)

North Texas head coach Dan McCarney topped a list of the best coaches in Conference USA released this week. (DRC file photo)

There is a lot more going on than one would expect at this time of the year in UNT athletics. Here’s a rundown of a few news items and tidbits of interest.

I am a little late to jump on the bandwagon, but Dan McCarney was named Conference USA’s top coach by the Sporting News this week.

Immediate reaction?

Yeah, we already knew that. Dan McCarney won nine games, including a bowl game at UNT three years after taking over a complete dumpster fire.

UNT is really lucky to have McCarney. Everyone else is noticing.

And in other news …

The Conference USA men’s golf tournament ended today with the Mean Green finishing in 10th place. UNT lost nearly its whole team after last season, including All-American Rodolfo Cazaubon and Carlos Ortiz, who is lighting it up on the Web.com Tour.

UNT went through what coach Brad Stracke described as a rebuilding year and should be better next season.

And finally, Fort Bend Elkins athlete Jonathan Giles continues to pile up scholarship offers …

UNT is in the hunt.

What makes this an even more interesting story to follow from here on out is that SMU has now also offered.

There is no other school/team out there UNT fans dislike more.
