The first stop of the UNT coaches caravan took place tonight over at Apogee Stadium.
A couple of news items of note:
– UNT has a major sponsor on board for a new baseball stadium.
– UNT will make a presentation to a company this week that is interested in the naming rights for the venue.
– UNT will likely field a team in 2016-17.
– UNT will move from the conceptual drawings stage to putting together plan drawings soon.
I will have a story in Wednesday’s paper about the caravans in general, but UNT went with a different format this time. UNT had four coaches up front at once, then had the three major sport coaches (football, men’s and women’s hoops) up from along with athletic director Rick Villarreal. They all took some friendly questions on how things are going with their programs.
UNT softball coach Tracey Kee was picking up a UNT Coach of the Year honors at the Greater Denton Sports Commission Banquet and had to leave early.
UNT coaches and officials hit on the need to expand the program’s fan base. The old “the same old faces” line came up.
I know some take offense, but I get the feeling that UNT does appreciate its long-time supporters. It just would like to see some growth.
The turnout seemed pretty decent in general. There were open seats, but the club level of the stadium is pretty big.
