Updated: UNT assistant David Anwar a candidate for Southern Miss job

David Anwar

North Texas assistant men’s basketball coach David Anwar has spoken with Doc Sadler about joining the coaching staff at Southern Miss, UNT coach Tony Benford confirmed Wednesday evening.

Patrick McGee of the Sun Herald spoke later in the evening with Sadler, who confirmed that that Anwar is a candidate to join his staff, although there has been no decision made on who the final member of his staff will be.

Southern Miss hired Sadler as its new head coach last week.

Anwar worked for Sadler at Nebraska, UTEP and Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Benford described Sadler as a mentor to Anwar, a longtime college assistant who came to UNT when Benford was hired to take over for Johnny Jones after the 2011-12 season. Benford and Anwar worked together at Nebraska under Sadler from 2006-08.

Anwar did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Anwar has spent the last two seasons at UNT. Benford said that Anwar is still currently a member of UNT’s staff and has not decided to leave for another opening.

Sadler announced that he had retained Jareem Dowling and hired Jeremy Cox as assistant coaches and hired Chris Croft as his director of operations on Tuesday.

Those additions left Sadler one last position for an assistant coach to fill.
