Saturday night recruiting notes, other tidbits

After a long day covering softball, I’ve found some time to get to the blog and the key recruiting notes of the day.

First off, the Nike Football Combine came through Dallas today. The best of the best when it comes to high school recruits showed up to show what they can do.

Make no mistake about it, combines like the Nike event are huge in recruiting. They can make or break prospects.

Well, it just make Billy McCrary. UNT has offered the Texas athlete, who we wrote about a while back.

McCrary was already blowing up and for what it’s worth is thought to be leaning toward signing with SMU, Texas State or Texas A&M, if the Aggies offer.

He put up a monster score today.

On the basketball front, Paris JC center Nouhoum Bocoum has committed to Arkansas State. Bocoum announced his decision on Twitter today, which we covered earlier.

I mentioned that I would come back and talk a little about where UNT stands.

UNT is moving toward and uptempo offense, but seems like it could still use a big guy so it doesn’t get killed on the glass like it did last year at times.

One name still floating out there is Tobe Okafor, a a 6-10 forward out of Western Texas College. Brad Winston, one of the experts in JUCO hoops recruiting, wrote a little about him this week.

Okafor is at Houston this weekend.

UNT could have a shot. It’s something to watch.

UNT is also in the mix with Gregory White-Pittman, a combo guard out of Louisiana, who we wrote about this week.

The clock is ticking in the late signing period. I expect UNT to make a move in the next few days/weeks.

And while we are at it, the UNT softball team split with Tulsa, the 18th-ranked team in the country, today. Check tomorrow’s paper for more.
