UNT recruiting target series — Erik McCoy

Erik McCoy had not heard from the coaches at UNT all that often over the last few months, when programs from across the country make the trek to Lufkin to talk to the top offensive line prospect.

That seems certain to change now that the Mean Green has jumped into the race to sign the 6-foot-5, 305-pound lineman and three-star prospect.

UNT offered McCoy a scholarship last week.

“I was pretty surprised by it because hadn’t been hearing a lot from them,” McCoy said. “I have not been up there yet. I plan on making a visit this summer.”

Oklahoma State, Arkansas State, Houston and Louisiana-Lafayette are among the other schools who have offered McCoy a scholarship. He was a first-team All-District 14-5A selection last season at tackle, but is expected to move inside to guard or center on the college level.

McCoy said he is open to all the schools that are recruiting him at this point.

“It doesn’t matter to me if a school is in a big conference or a smaller one,” McCoy said. “It’s a matter of where I fit in.”

UNT special teams coordinator and running backs coach Tommy Perry is recruiting McCoy.

McCoy has talked to Perry on a couple of occasions and met members of UNT’s staff when they stopped by a Lufkin practice last spring.

McCoy could make a decision on where he will continue his career on the college level in the next few months.

“I am going to try to make a decision at about the beginning of the season,” McCoy said. “I will do it when it feels like it is the right time.”
