UNT recruiting target series — RD Wegmann

RD Wegmann is doing his homework when it comes to recruiting and the opportunities he has to continue his football career on the college level.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive lineman from Wichita Falls Rider has offers from both UNT and Colorado State and is also receiving interest from Air Force.

Wegmann is taking a long look at all those options to make sure he makes the right decision. Here is a link to his Hudl.com highlights.

“I have been looking into the schools that have offered,” Wegmann said. “I want to go to a place I can go back to after I gradate and be involved. A friend of mine, his dad played at Alabama and can’t get back as much as he wants.”

The proximity of UNT to Wegmann’s hometown is one of several factors that play in UNT’s favor in what as of now is a two-team race with Colorado State for his commitment.

Wegmann grew up playing baseball and is familiar with the Denton area from playing select league games in the area. He also has family in the Metroplex with one aunt and uncle who live in Allen and another aunt and uncle who live in Dallas.

“That is big for me,” Wegmann said of having family nearby. “I have cousins who I would like to look up to me.”

Wegmann also has a few ties to UNT’s program. UNT redshirt freshman offensive lineman Harrison Sorge played with Wegmann at Rider. Harrison Sorge’s younger brother is one of Wegmann’s current high school teammates.

While Wegmann has several ties to UNT and the area, he is also interested in CSU.

“I am going to take a visit to Colorado State after we get out of school,” Wegmann said. “I want to go up there and make sure I look at all my options.”

Wegmann’s performance as a junior elevated him as a prospect.

He was a first-team All-District 5-4A selection last season as a defensive end. UNT is recruiting Wegmann as a defensive lineman who could play either tackle or end, depending on how he develops.

UNT offered Wegmann shortly after he attended the school’s junior day.

UNT tight ends coach Nick Quartaro is recruiting Wegmann, who has also gotten to know defensive line coach Kevin Patrick over the last few weeks.

“What I am looking at are the coaches — and I like coach Quartaro and coach Patrick,” Wegmann said. “Facilities are No. 2 and school is No. 3.”

Wegmann plans on considering his future for a few more months before he makes a decision.

“As of right now, unless something changes, I will wait until after the season and then make a decision,” Wegmann said. “I don’t want it to be the focus of my senior season and I don’t want to make a decision too soon.”
