UNT recruiting target series — Riley Daniel

Hearing from Tulsa, a school right up the road in his home state, was no surprise for Riley Daniel, an offensive lineman from Ringling, Okla.

What Daniel never expected was a second scholarship offer from UNT, another school located not too far from home, even though it’s across state lines.

“I wasn’t expecting to hear from North Texas,” Daniel said. “I didn’t think they would be interested, but I’m glad they are.”

That is particularly true after Daniel visited UNT and found out what the school has to offer. Daniel attended UNT’s junior day and also came down to watch the Mean Green work out during spring practice.

“North Texas has really good coaches,” Daniel said. “I liked what I saw at the stadium and team looked good.

“I like that North Texas is located close to home and that they won a bowl game last season. There are a lot of good things going on there. That win showed that things are going well.”

The momentum UNT has built as a program has put the Mean Green squarely in what appears to be shaping up as a two-team race with Tulsa.

UNT tight ends coach Nick Quartaro is recruiting Daniel and leading the program’s efforts to regain a recruiting foothold in the state that used to be a key talent base for the program.

Daniel, who is 6-foot-6 and 305 pounds, said he also likes what Tulsa has to offer and is considering the Golden Hurricane. He just doesn’t know as much about the program at this point. Ringling has been to UNT’s campus more times than he has been to Tulsa.

Daniel will likely visit UNT officially some time in the next few months and make a decision later in the year.

“I am going to try to wait until after my football season or late in the year,” Daniel said. “I don’t want to rush into anything.”
