UNT recruiting target series — Sam Miller

Sam Miller developed into a top high school player in Texas.

If the Canton defensive end gets his wish, his college career will follow a similar path in his home state, where he is garnering interest from a pair of Conference USA programs and another Texas school.

UNT recently offered Miller, who is 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, a scholarship, joining UTSA, Texas State, Oregon State, Memphis, Nevada and Louisiana-Monroe in the hunt for his commitment.

“I want to be close to home,” Miller said. “If the school is in the state, I will really consider it. Educational opportunities and then the football program are important to me.”

UNT offensive line coach Mike Simmonds is recruiting Miller, who was a first-team All-District 15-3A selection as a junior.

“I am definitely interested in North Texas and going to school there,” Miller said. “I was surprised to be offered. I have heard about North Texas and that it is a good school. It felt like it would be nice to go there.”

Miller just doesn’t know as much about the school as UTSA, the other C-USA Texas school that has offered him a scholarship.

“I went to UTSA in April, went to a spring practice and got to tour campus,” Miller said. “It was really nice. A couple of weeks ago I went there for their spring game.”

Miller plans to travel to UNT this summer. What he sees on his visit will be a key factor in his decision.

“I want to consider the town and the people there and find somewhere I feel comfortable,” Miller said.

Miller plans to explore his options over the next few months, both before and after visiting UNT.

“I am not sure when I want to commit,” Miller said. “I want to see what is out there for me and if anyone else offers. I will probably commit a few days before signing day.”
