Breaking news — Chris Jones leaves UNT basketball program

North Texas point guard Chris Jones has received his release and will transfer to another school for his senior season, head coach Tony Benford confirmed on Saturday afternoon.

UNT head coach Tony Benford confirmed Saturday afternoon that point guard Chris Jones has left the program.

Jones was entering his senior season at UNT and ranks sixth in school history with 282 career assists and third in career steals with 127. He scored 648 career points in just 66 games.

Jones missed the second half of his freshman season after becoming academically ineligible and played in just 16 games as a sophomore after breaking his foot midway through the season. He ranked third on the team with an average of 7.5 points a game last season, when he led the team with 127 assists.

Jones was granted a release by UNT and could look to transfer to another school for his senior season.

“I want to thank Chris for his contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors,” Benford said. “That is part of college basketball now with the number of players who are transferring.”
