Friday night tidbits (UNT will see former recruiting targets in C-USA)

I’m headed back to Denton tomorrow after some R&R. Before we leave Yellowstone, here are just a few items of note on the UNT front:

UNT is doing a terrific job in recruiting thus far. Over the last few months, we have talked to several prospects who are/were considering UNT.

Two came off the board in the last couple of days and committed to other C-USA schools, which makes it even more interesting. Highland Park offensive lineman Clayton Woods, who we talked to a while back, committed to UTSA.

Woods is a good prospect who had offers from Southern Miss and New Mexico, but there are still plenty of players out there for UNT in terms of offensive linemen.

Nafees Lyon, a cornerback from Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek that UNT was recruiting before switching defensive backs coaches, ended up committing to Charlotte. He’s another player UNT could see down the line in C-USA. He is also someone we talked to for our recruiting series.

Which brings us to the broader question/point of the day. Part of the attraction of Conference USA and playing regional rivals is that those rivals will often have players who are from somewhere close to Denton or were recruited by UNT. That scenario played out a few times in the past, notably with Cowboys running back/Dallas native/UNT killer/Middle Tennessee star Phillip Tanner.

I’m not saying that Woods or Lyon will be huge impact players down the line for UTSA and Charlotte, respectively.

That possibility exists, though.

It’s one of those aspects of college rivalries UNT has been missing over the years.

And in other news, top UNT targets Tyler Moore will be at the Texas-OU game this year. Texas recently offered.
