Breaking news — UNT signee Fonzale Davis headed to JUCO

Davis

Fonzale Davis, a wide receiver from South Oak Cliff who ranked among UNT’s top incoming freshmen, did not qualify academically and plans to attend junior college, UNT coach Dan McCarney said Monday.

Davis caught 77 passes for 1,651 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior, when he was an honorable mention selection on the Associated Press Class 4A all-state team. He was also a member of The Dallas Morning News’ All-Area first-team.

Davis was one of four high school receivers UNT signed who were scheduled to report this weekend. UNT also signed Jalen Adams of Southmoore in Moore, Okla. and Tee Goree and O’Keeron Rutherford of Carthage.

“We feel good about our freshman wide receivers,” McCarney said. “You never want anyone to not make it. We felt like his talent was worth a chance on seeing if he could make it.”

Davis signed with Kilgore College last winter at the same time he signed with UNT.

And in other UNT reporting day tidbits …

– Former Snow College lineman Darren Denucci, who was a late addition to UNT’s signing class, has reported.

– Backup wide receiver Mike Marshall is giving up football, capping what McCarney described as a remarkable success story. Marshall walked on, earned a scholarship, played on a team that beat UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl and graduated. Marshall was not among six wide receivers on UNT’s depth chart following spring practice.
