UNT head coach Dan McCarney released a statement on linebacker Sed Ellis and tight end Chris Loving this afternoon.
“After having a chance to speak with Chris and Sed about this situation I have decided to suspend them from the North Texas football program indefinitely. We have built this program on integrity and we have high expectations from all of our student athletes on and off the field. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
Ellis and Loving were both arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft in connection with an incident involving two televisions at a Denton Walmart this week.
UNT encountered a similar situation last summer with defensive Richard Abbe after he was arrested on DWI charges
Abbe was reinstated before the season and went on to have a standout senior season that saw him earn honorable mention recognition on the All-Conference USA team.
UNT will now hope for a similar outcome with Loving and particularly Ellis, a former Paris High standout who appeared to be in line to earn a starting job at outside linebacker after spring practice. Ellis was listed as a co-starter along with Jamal Marshall at the end of spring drills.
