UNT received some good news today from Edmond (Okla.) Santa Fe defensive back Ashton Preston, who announced via Twitter that he has committed to play for the Mean Green …
“I’ve decided to further my education and football career and verbally commit to The University of North Texas!”
Preston is rated as a three-star prospect in the composite 247 Sports rankings.
We wrote about Preston a while back in our on-going UNT recruiting target series.
I followed up with Preston tonight. He is close with UNT linebacker Calvin Minor and also has an aunt that lives 20 minutes from campus.
Preston visited campus about two weeks ago and met new UNT cornerbacks coach LaMarcus Hicks. That meeting sealed the deal for UNT. Preston felt like Hicks is a coach he has a connection with who could help develop him.
Preston wanted to commit on his visit, but was convinced by his father to wait a while before making a final decision.
He did just that, but still settled on UNT.
UNT was the only school to offer Preston. Louisville was showing interest, but never officially offered.
UNT showed Preston it really wanted him to sign, which paid off in the end.
Check Friday’s paper for more.
