UNT recruiting target series — Dailon Holmes

Dailon Holmes enjoyed a jump-start when he began chasing his dream of playing college football.

The journey is one that is full of challenges and obstacles for even the best of high school athletes. Fortunately for Holmes, he had a couple of pretty good guides to help him along the way.

Dailon’s father, DeCarlos Holmes, played at Grambling for legendary coach Eddie Robinson and is now an assistant coach at East Mississippi College. His mother was a standout all-around athlete who picked up a silver medal at the state track meet in high school in addition to playing basketball and softball.

“I’m from a family of athletes and want to be able to go to the next level, play in the NFL and help kids reach their goals,” Holmes said.

The next step for Holmes, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end, is selecting a college where he will continue his career.

UNT offered Holmes in February and has begun to build a connection with him. Offensive line coach Mike Simmonds is recruiting Holmes, who has noticed what UNT has accomplished under coach Dan McCarney, including beating UNLV in last season’s Heart of Dallas Bowl

UNT is the only school that has offered Holmes thus far and hosted him during one of its events for juniors this summer.

“I really, really enjoyed it,” Holmes said. “There was a lot of energy. I love that place.

“North Texas has a great program and coach McCarney is a good coach. Those guys teach you about life.”

While Holmes has just one offer from UNT at this point, he believes he could be on the verge of seeing more schools jump into the race to sign him during his senior season.

“A UTEP coach came and told me that they like my film,” Holmes said. “He said that if I keep working I would get a lot of bigger offers than schools on the Conference USA level.”

Holmes has focused on putting in the work it will take to improve his recruiting stock over the last few months, not to mention help Denton turn around its football program.

The Broncos last made the playoffs in 2010.

“I have been working hard to take this team to the playoffs,” said Holmes, who stays to do extra drills every day after practice.

While Holmes is focusing on improving on the field, he has taken time to consider what is important to him off the field as well.

“Education is important because you are not going to play football your whole life,” Holmes said. “I want to get my degree and my masters and become a television commentator.”

The question now is where Holmes will pursue that goal as he waits to see if any schools other than UNT will offer him a scholarship.

“I want to wait it out, but I don’t want to wait too long,” Holmes said. “I want to see how many offers I get.”
