Four downs: Keys to today’s game
Don’t be intimidated by the situation
UNT rolled into Georgia last year and hung with the Bulldogs into the second half largely because it wasn’t intimidated by the surroundings or the situation. The players who established that confidence have mostly moved on after graduating. UNT will find out today if it still has that calm resolve it showed last season.
Run the ball effectively
If there is one barometer that shows how a game is going to go for UNT it is how effective it the Mean Green are running the ball. Josh Greer will make his first start at quarterback. UNT will want to ease him into the role and must take advantage of a veteran offensive line by running the ball with Reggie Pegram and Antoinne Jimmerson.
Don’t get run over on defense
UNT was terrific across the board on defense a year ago, allowing 17.8 points a game. Most of the players who made that performance possible are gone, especially in UNT’s front seven on defense. Texas has two good running backs and a huge offensive line and will pound away at an undersized UNT defensive front. UNT can’t afford to break in the face of that rushing attack.
Make the big plays again
One of the reasons UNT was able to hang with Georgia last year was the host of huge plays it made. The Mean Green returned a kick for a touchdown and blocked a punt it recovered for a second touchdown. UNT will need to make another series of big plays in its game against Texas to have a chance to pull out the win.
