What’s UNT getting in Munden? H.S. coach has the answer

UNT picked up a commitment from Marshall offensive lineman Chett Munden a few days ago.

What’s UNT getting in the big tackle?

Marshall coach Clint Harper knows better than anyone and believes UNT is getting a steal in the 6-7, 305-pound senior whose best football is in front of him.

“North Texas is getting a heck of a football player,” Harper said. “Chett has a lot of upside. He might grow to 6-8. He has a 16 or 17 shoe. He could get to 340 and not be overweight.”

Harper knows well what a major college offensive lineman looks like. He coached Texas A&M offensive lineman Jami Hightower and Iowa State offensive lineman Jacob Dunning.

Harper said Munden has good feet and is a talented baseball player as well as a good offensive lineman. He ranks 36th in his class academically.

“He is smart enough to realize what North Texas is doing offensively,” Harper said.

Munden is also a hard worker, which is how he became a major college recruit.

“When I got here he wasn’t very strong,” Harper said. “He was 6-5 and 260. I told him that to play Division I he was going to have to live in the weight room. He has and has improved. He is squatting over 500 pounds and his bench has gone up by 100 pounds. That is how hard he has worked in the weight room.

“There is no doubt he could be a good tackle on the college level. Our offense is so similar with the inside zone.”

UNT wasn’t the only college that noticed Munden’s development.

“There were a lot of people who came through,” Harper said. “He is on a lot of lists. No one wanted to pull the trigger. North Texas did. Other schools said that they would get back to him. I want guys to pull the trigger. I have seen guys get injured and have people back off.”

Louisiana Tech was among a few schools that asked Munden to grayshirt and enroll in December.

UNT was not only willing to offer a scholarship, but also invested the time to foster a relationship with Munden. UNT offensive line coach Mike Simmonds recruited Munden.

“Chett is really excited,” Harper said. “He loves coach Simmonds. He did a good job of building a relationship with him. He had a good meeting with him.”

Part of Simmonds sales pitch was the opportunity for playing time. UNT’s starting guards Cyril Lemon and Mason Y’Barbo and tackle Antonio Johnson are all seniors.

“North Texas is losing a lot of starters,” Harper said. “That is another reason he liked North Texas. He has a shot to get on the field.”
