San Antonio forward Tony Lewis talks visit to UNT

San Antonio Central Catholic power forward Tony Lewis started out with a list of 25 schools that offered him a scholarship.

The 6-foot-9 power forward will head to Denton on Thursday with that list trimmed to about a half dozen and said on the eve of his trip that UNT is well positioned as he prepares for a series of official visits.

Lewis will visit Weber State on the 19th and Santa Clara later this month following his visit to UNT. After those visits, Lewis plans to visit two schools out of a group that includes Kansas State, Creighton, New Mexico and Washington State. ranks Lewis 29th on its list of the top college prospects in the state.

“I am still pretty open,” Lewis said. “Those are the schools that I feel comfortable with and where I feel a connection with the staff. Those are the schools that are really interested in me.”

UNT began recruiting Lewis last summer after seeing him on the AAU circuit and watching him during junior season at Central Catholic when he averaged 17.5 points and 14 rebounds a game.

That performance caught the attention of several colleges and led Lewis to consider what is important to him in terms of where he will continue his career on the college level.

“I am looking for somewhere I can get my degree and somewhere I feel comfortable,” Lewis said. “That is where I will spend four years. I also want to win games, contend for titles and get into the dance.”

Lewis believes that UNT could be that place. The Mean Green finished 16-16 last season in their first year in Conference USA and are in need of post players.

UNT will lose senior Colin Voss to graduation after the upcoming season and will have just three forwards returning.

UNT coach Tony Benford and assistant David Anwar are recruiting Lewis.

“Coach Benford and coach Anwar have told me what they want me to come in do,” Lewis said. “They are short in the post. They said that I could come in and play right away, and if not start, then play a lot of minutes.

“They told me that they are going to recruit another big. They were honest with me right away and told me I will have an opportunity to compete for a starting job.”

Lewis does not want to drag out the recruiting process and plans to make a decision later this summer after taking his official visits.

“Once I visit everywhere I will know where I want to go,” Lewis said.

While Lewis has yet to make that decision, he likes what he has seen so far in terms of the situation at UNT.

“I am interested in North Texas and getting to know coach Benford and coach Anwar,” Lewis said. “I can see myself mixing it up with those guys to make a championship team.”
