North Texas will promote Troy Reffett to full-time defensive coordinator and is in the process of hiring former Cincinnati co-defensive coordinator Jeff Koonz as its linebackers coach, a source close to the situation said on Thursday.
Both moves were expected.
Reffett served as UNT’s co-defensive coordinator last season and will take over the Mean Green’s defense full-time following the departure of Mike Ekeler, who has left the staff for a position at North Carolina.
Reffett has extensive experience in the 3-3-5 system UNT used last season, when the Mean Green made dramatic progress defensively.
UNT allowed 32.6 points per game in Reffett’s first season at UNT, down from 41.2 points the previous season.
Koonz helped Cincinnati’s defense that allowed 26.9 points per game last season. He spent four seasons coaching the linebackers at Louisiana Tech earlier in his career. The Bulldogs are one of UNT’s chief rivals in Conference USA’s West Division.
The addition of Koonz to UNT’s staff is expected to become official in the next few days.
UNT is still in the process of interviewing candidates for its opening for an offensive line coach and is just starting to look for a new defensive line coach, a source said.
