North Texas coach Seth Littrell made the addition of Jeff Koonz as his new linebackers coach official today.
UNT was raided by a series of Power Five schools that snapped up three Mean Green assistants since the end of last season. UNT also parted ways with special teams coordinator Tommy Perry at the end of the year.
Koonz is the latest coach Littrell has picked to fill one of those holes. The choice appears to be a solid one.
Koonz was the co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Cincinnati last season under Tommy Tuberville, who stepped down at the end of the year. He was also the linebackers coach at Louisiana Tech earlier in his career.
It’s that experience at another school now in Conference USA that makes Koonz particularly intriguing.
“He is a young, energetic coach with a lot of quality experience at Cincinnati, around the Big 12, and in Conference USA as well from his time at Louisiana Tech,” Littrell said in a prepared statement. “He is an excellent teacher and we look forward to immediately hitting the ground running with him this spring. Jeff comes very highly recommended from two coaches I have a great deal of respect for in Sonny Dykes and Gene Chizik.”
UNT has now added two coaches to its staff in Koonz and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi.
Littrell still has openings for an offensive and defensive line coach.
UNT is targeting former Lamar offensive line coach Chuck Langston for its offensive line job, a source told the Denton Record-Chronicle this week.
