It's starting to look like UNT's chances to land Arlington Oakridge shooting guard Chris Babb are slim. Babb is headed to Iowa for an official visit this weekend and has named two leaders -- Iowa and Penn State. If Babb commits to another school, it could make landing another shooting guard critical for the Mean Green. UNT has an offer out to Dallas Kimball guard Darian Thibodeaux, who is looking more and more like a key target for the Mean Green. Thibodeaux is not as highly regarded as some of the other players UNT has been after, but he is rated No. 56 in the state by Texashoops.com. While we are on the topic of hoops recruiting, my friend Mike Kunstadt over at Texashoops.com had an update on Garland Christian's Andrew Davis. The 6-8 power forward who is rated No. 35 in the state said he is going to take a visit to Evansville, but also mentioned UNT. "They [Evansville's coaches] haven't offered but the coach wants me to take a look at their campus," Davis told Texashoops.com. "I've also heard from North Texas a lot recently and Air Force has given me an offer to go to their prep school, so that's an option. I've also heard a bit from Furman and New Hampshire." There is little doubt that UNT is in the market for at least one more post player with the impending departure of seniors Keith Wooden and Quincy Williams. UNT has one on the board in Arlington Grace Prep power forward Ben Knox. It’s starting to look like Davis is at the top of UNT’s wish list. |

I would like to see NT find a replacement for Rich Young, a player to fill the role of a 3-4 hybrid.
This player would be big, strong and quick enough to guard big 3's, such as Western Kentucky's Courtney Lee and South Alabama's Demetric Bennett.
The 3-4 hybrid would also be able to guard the smaller, quicker 4's on the perimeter that so many teams are using now, such as La Monroe's Lance Brasher and Denver's Rob Lewis.
The 3-4 hybrid would play the 4 position when NT has a lead late in games or against a full-court press. He would be an extra ball handler and free throw shooter in that role.
Of the players I have seen the obvious candidate is Roderick Flemings of Weatherford CC. Unfortunately the whole college basketball world wants him now and he may not return to NT.
Fleming's team mate, Edvinas Ruzgas of Lithuania, could also fill the role. Ruzgas is averaging over 20 points per game for the 23-5 conference champion Weatherford Coyotes. He is listed at 6'6 and 200 lbs but to my eyes he appears to be 2-3 inches taller. He was usually the tallest guy on the court. Despite his height, Ruzgas has good wing skills. He made ten 3-pointers in a recent game in which he scored 44 points.
Another prospect is 6'3 Austin Brown of Lewisville High. Brown is a super athlete who plays much bigger than his size. He was not just a low-post player in high school. This season he spent much of his time on offense playing on the perimeter and developing his shooting and ball handling skills. He is a smart player and he gives his all every minute he is on the court.

Agreed on Austin Brown. I saw him play about a half dozen times this season. He's only 6-3, but he has extremely quick hops and a good body, thick enough to defend some of the biggest players. He might have a tough time offensively in college. His adequate, but his handles aren't wonderful. But I think that if he relies on energy and defense to set the tone for his play-he can be a contributor.
I'm really excited that he's at least interested in North Texas--hopefully he'll make his way to Denton.
