Capps to interview, football notes

Former UT-Arlington head coach Donna Capps said Thursday that she will interview to become the next head coach at UNT sometime next week.

Capps took UTA to the NCAA Tournament twice before leaving the school to become an administrator at the high school level.

Capps said she believes UNT has a lot of potential as a program.

There will be a full story in tomorrow's Denton Record-Chronicle detailing what Capps and some of the other candidates for the UNT job had to say in the last few days.

On the football front, UNT head coach Todd Dodge said that all of his players that were not already ruled out for the spring will participate in Friday's scrimmage.

UNT will make up the one practice that was postponed due to weather on Monday. The weather threatened to cut the Mean Green's practice on Thursday short, so the team changed the agenda for its workouts, starting with the team drills that would usually take place at the end of practice.

The key drill of the day was a third-down scrimmage that included 21 scenarios. The Mean Green's defense won the scrimmage 13-9, stopping its counterparts on offense 13 times. The offense converted nine opportunities.

Former Southlake Carroll wide receiver and Rice transfer Evan Fentriss continued to work out on the side during practice while recovering from an injury. Head coach Todd Dodge said he expects Fentriss to be ready to resume running patterns and working out with the Mean Green's quarterbacks on July 1, which would give him time to prepare for the season.

A couple of impressive plays were made by UNT's wide recievers during drills at the end of practice. Sam Roberson made a nice catch over Antoine Bush for a touchdown. Breece Johnson also made a nice grab on a fade pattern.

Post your thoughts on the blog. Is Donna Capps the best pick for UNT's next basketball coach? Who is your pick?

Sam Roberson's name has been mentoned a lot lately. I hope to see him starting this season. I wish him and thetean well.
