Schaefer comes through, football, recruiting notes
Texas A&M associate head coach Vic Schaefer interviewed for UNT's opening for a women's basketball coach on Thursday, just a few hours after former WNBA coach Nancy Lieberman removed herself from consideration.
There will be a story in tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle with a quote from Schaefer, who was impressed with what UNT has to offer.
Former UT-Arlington head coach Donna Capps is up Friday and will be the last of four candidates to interview for the job.
I mentioned the other day that Clemson associate head coach Shanice Stephens made a good impression during her interview. I received a couple of question on why UNT would consider Stephens, considering she has not been a head coach and Clemson wasn't all that great last year. What one has to remember is that Stephens was at Rice for nine years before she went to Clemson. Rice averaged just short of 20 wins a year in that span. Stephens is also supposed to be an ace in recruiting, which is key for any program.
Will Stephens get the job? Who knows, but my gut feeling is it will come down to Stephens or Capps.
On the football front, I stopped by the last practice of the spring today and picked up a few notes. Offensive lineman Matt Tomlinson had knee surgery on Thursday. Head coach Todd Dodge said UNT would know more about the extent of the injury after the surgery, but he had yet to talk to team doctors when I talked with him after practice.
UNT also introduced Kansas State in preparation for next season's opener, working against the Wildcats' offense and defense for the first time.
UNT's spring game will last 80-90 plays and will use the format I detailed on the blog yesterday.
A new name has also surfaced on the UNT basketball recruiting front. Cowley County (Kan.) Community College power forward Eric McKinney visited UNT late last month and is at Arkansas State this weekend, according to Rivals.com. McKinney averaged 11 points and seven rebounds a game last season.
Post your thoughts on the blog. Is Capps the coach you want at UNT?
