A UNT official confirmed today what had long been rumored this off-season. Defensive end Eddrick Gilmore will not be back with the Mean Green this fall. Gilmore was one of the few playmakers UNT had on defense last season. He finished with 35 tackles, including six for losses, 1.5 sacks, five pass breakups and two quarterback hurries in just nine games, seven of which he started. Losing Gilmore is a tough blow for UNT, which was counting on the former Alief Hastings standout to be a cornerstone in the rebuilding process after a disastrous 2007 season defensively. UNT finished last nationally with an average of 45.1 points allowed per game. Gilmore would have been a perfect complement for incoming junior college defensive end Alonzo Horton. UNT will now have to turn to a host of young players to fill the void, including Marquis Sykes. There will be a full story in tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle. Post your thoughts on the blog. How big a blow is losing Gilmore for UNT? |

This is a huge blow. I can't think of any player we needed more on either side of the ball. Someone else is really going to have to step up.

Is this an academic casualty or is it for personal reasons? If it is academic, there's another hit to the APR.
