The UNT board of regents will consider a one-year extension for men's basketball coach Johnny Jones this week. There will be a full story in tomorrow's paper that runs through all the details, but the bottom line is Jones would have another year added to the end of his deal, one that would extend him through 2013. Colleges like to keep their coaches with deals five years out these days to show recruits that they are going to be around for a while. After seeing Jones lead UNT to back-to-back 20-win seasons, extending him seem like a pretty good idea for the school. There aren't a whole lot of coaches in UNT history with winning records for their careers. Jones and soccer coach John Hedlund head a short list of current coaches over .500 at UNT. On the football front, Kelvin Drake making it back for UNT's season opener at Kansas State is no sure bet. Drake still hasn't gone through contact drills. In an interesting side note, Todd Dodge said he is considering moving Drake to guard when he comes back and leaving JJ Johnson at center. I think Ickey Woods did less shuffling in his career as a running back with the Cincinnati Bengals than UNT has done with its offensive linemen the last couple of weeks. The entry "UNT regents to consider extension for Jones, ect." has no entry tags.
Not much went on during what amounted to a run-through this morning at Fouts Field, but I did talk with UNT head coach Todd Dodge for a minute about his situation in terms of a backup quarterback. Dodge said he has yet to make a decision, but either Daniel Meager or Nathan Tune will enter the season No. 2 on the depth chart. Riley Dodge will be among a few freshmen UNT will take into the season as a member of the travel squad. Riley could end up playing depending on how the season plays out. I stand by my guess that he won't see the field this season. There were also a couple more jersey number changes. Defensive back Royce Hill is wearing No. 21 while running back Lance Dunbar is wearing No. 5. The entry "Quick hits from practice, Tune or Meager will be backup QB" has no entry tags. |
