Mean Green

The North Texas women's basketball team will have a little different look this season than anticipated a few weeks ago after the departure of Crowley forward Ryan Green, a member of the Mean Green's 2008 recruiting class.

I talked with Green today and she confirmed that she has been released from her scholarship and will play for UT-Arlington. Green signed with UNT over UTA, which was more than happy to use a scholarship it still had open on a player they were after a few months ago.

It's only natural that UNT's roster would change over to a certain degree after a coaching change, especially when it comes to new recruits who still have four years of eligibility. Green was recruited by former UNT head coach Tina Slinker.

Both Green and new UNT head coach Shanice Stephens took the high road when it came to parting ways, saying they wished each other luck.

Both parties might be better off in the long run. Stephens will have another scholarship to offer to a player who fits her system, while Green will be able to play for UTA and a coach in Samantha Morrow who believes she is a good fit for her program. Green was a two-time all-region selection.

It should be interesting to see what Stephens can do with the extra scholarship she now has at her disposal. Stephens has already landed Texas transfer Niqky Hughes and Rice transfer Brittney Hudson, a pair of players who were ranked among the top 10 in their class by Texashoops.com.
