Judging by my e-mail, the truth isn't real popular among UNT fans these days. But I cannot tell a lie, the pounding the Mean Green took today at Rice is going to be costly.

I didn't think there was any way UNT was going to win this game, but there is no way I saw a 77-20 loss coming down the pipe.

UNT head coach Todd Dodge said he and his team were embarrassed by the way they played against the Owls. Frankly, UNT should be embarrassed. The Mean Green couldn't stop Rice on defense, made too many mistakes on offense and was flat terrible on special teams.

Rice called the dogs off in the fourth quarter. The Owls basically ran the ball to the middle of the field and fell down every time they had the chance.

Rice head coach David Bailiff actually tried to apologize to UNT head coach Todd Dodge after the game.

That's a bad sign for UNT.

Another bad sign for the Mean Green, Jarett Dillard and Chase Clement received a helmet sticker on ESPN's college football show late Saturday night for torching UNT's secondary.

That isn't the way to sell recruits on the virtues of playing for the Mean Green or UNT's student body on bucking up $300 a student per year down the line to pay for a new stadium.

The only good news for the Mean Green is that it essentially has a chance to start over in Sun Belt Conference play. The bad news is that the teams in this league are pretty good. FIU beat Toledo for its first win of the season and will be on a roll when it comes to Fouts Field next week.

UNT didn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence in its prospects for the conference season after being blasted by Rice.

Those are the facts. They might not be popular, but they are what they are.

This team is horrible! They are making it embarrassing to admit that I'm a fan.

I am struggling to find a game we will win this year.

I also wonder if Todd Dodge is in over his head with things. In 2-3 seasons I would just like to see improvement but we are declining at a very fast pace. 57 point deficit to Rice. To RICE?!

It seems that our team has no heart, we play zone way too much and opponents pick us a part with it, don't get me started on special teams, and our coaching is very suspect. I hope someone is held accountable and not getting all these free passes.

To all those who thought hiring a high-school coach was a good idea, I hate to say it: "Told you so."

"Jarett Dillard and Chase Clement received a helmet sticker on ESPN's college football show late Saturday night for torching UNT's secondary."

Technically, they received a helmet sticker for torching lots of secondaries for 3+ seasons. The sticker recognized them setting the all-time NCAA QB-to-WR TD combo record (despite the fact that Clement missed half of 2006 with an injury and that they spent 2005 in an option offense).

I know that the kids are playing as hard as they are capable of playing. I know that the coaching staff is doing all they can to get the "system" executed. Where's was the Athletic Director in making sure that a consistent recruiting process was taking place across all sports at UNT. Seems that football got missed because the well isn't dry; but, it's really shallow...and that's not the fault of the kids putting on the uniform this season.
