November 11, 2008UNT is up 85-75 with 14.6 seconds left. I am out. The entry "This one is over" has no entry tags. TWU has hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull within 78-71 with 2:38 left at the Super Pit. Jo Hall has 16 points for UNT, which is struggling to contain Renee Renz and Jessica Durr. Both have 21 points for TWU. The entry "TWU making a late push" has no entry tags. UNT finished the half on a 13-4 run and is up 48-40 at halftime. Jo Hall has 10 points in the first half for the Mean Green. Renee Renz has 16 for TWU. UNT has a 27-19 edge in rebounds, which is one big reason the Mean Green is up. The entry "At the half -- UNT 48, TWU 40" has no entry tags. TWU is giving UNT all it can handle and then some at the Super Pit. The Pioneers are up 36-35 in the first half. Former Arkansas-Little Rock standout Renee Renz has 12 points. The entry "UNT trails TWU" has no entry tags. UNT has gone on a 10-2 run and is up 24-16 in the first half. The Mean Green has gotten its open-court game going. Tricia Lee has six points for UNT. The entry "UNT back on track" has no entry tags. The first half is nearly halfway over here at the Super Pit and UNT is tied with TWU 14-14 in the big crosstown throwdown game. Amber Jackson is not playing tonight while completing her suspension from over the summer. Freshman Mansa El and Tricia Lee have looked good early. The entry "We are under way at the Super Pit" has no entry tags. One of the surprises early on in practice for the UNT men's basketball team has been Ben Knox, a 6-10 freshman forward. Head coach Johnny Jones said today during UNT's weekly press conference that Knox has put on 15-20 pounds and is making a big impression. The choice Jones is pondering is whether or not to redshirt a player who could be his center of the future. UNT has Justin Howerton, Eric Tramiel, Harold Stewart and George Odufuwa who are expected to play significant minutes in the frontcourt. Jones said he wishes he could have redshirted Howerton, who is now a senior. Post your thoughts on the blog. Should UNT shelf Knox this season? The entry "Jones will consider redshirting Knox" has no entry tags. UNT fans will get their first look at new head women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens and her troops tonight when the Mean Green takes on TWU. Yea, I know a game against the Pioneers doesn't sound all that inviting for the average Greenie backer out there, but this one could be intriguing for a number of reasons. First off, Stephens is going to an up-tempo style of offense and has a bunch of athletes to run her system with. Brittney James is a perfect fit and Amber Jackson can get up and down the floor. I might be drinking the Kool-aid here, but I think this team will be a lot better than most UNT fans expect. Tina Slinker left some talented players in the program and some of the recruits Stephens hung on to might make an impact. Stephens has said she likes Mansa El. I haven't had a chance to sit around at practice with football in full swing, but from what little I have seen and heard, this team will be fun to watch. A game against the Pioneers might not be all that bad, either. TWU hung with Wyoming for a while last season and lost by a respectable margin against a nationally ranked squad. These girls won't roll over for the Mean Green. Throw in the fact that the whole exhibition festivities benefit a good cause in FCA and it really should be a good night for local hoops. And it could be a chance to see UNT win a game. After four straight losses at home this season in football, I think just about every UNT fan out there could use a win of any kind.
