Here is what you need to know about UNT and the six scholarships it lost on this year's APR report.
First off, in the end, UNT will only be down four scholarships. If you remember back to last year, UNT lost five scholarships. Later on it came out that the football program was supposed to lose eight slots.
UNT struck a deal with the NCAA to reduce the number to five by putting a plan in place to improve its score. UNT could earn all three scholarships back, if it posted a score of 925. It fell short of that goal and lost all three on this year's report. Throw in the additional three it lost this year and you have six.
What UNT did to hedge its bet was serve two of the scholarship penalties that were pending on that appeal last year. There is only one left to serve in addition to the three it lost this time around.
And there you have the four.
UNT head coach Todd Dodge and athletic director Rick Villarreal are convinced that this is the last year the team will lose scholarships.
The one really bad year UNT had on its four-year average will fall off the back end in time for next year's report. Remember the report is averaged over four years.
UNT will have 81 scholarships to give next season.
Losing four hurts, and UNT will take a PR hit for being one of the worst APR offenders in football again this year, but it could be worse.
The good news is UNT's basketball team made a big jump and avoided penalties.
UNT just needs some good news in football and is really not getting it on any front at this point. Players are leaving, the hit from the APR report again, the last several seasons when it comes to the team's performance on the field.
It's all green, but it's just not all good at this point.
