Another recruiting raking for UNT's incoming class

The dead of the summer is here and one of the big topics of conversation among UNT fans is how big an impact the incoming recruiting class will make. About all we have to go on at this point are the opinions of the experts.

The only one I haven't mentioned yet is Dave Campbell's, which gulped down a big glass of the green Kool-Aid and picked UNT to win four games. It's interesting considering what the magazine has to say about UNT's incoming recruiting class.

UNT is ranked in a tie for ninth with UTEP among the 10 Bowl Subdivision teams in the state.

That ranking pretty much rounds out the list of experts on the recruiting front.

Rivals.com has UNT ranked in a tie for No. 114 nationally, last in Texas and a tie for fifth in the nine-team Sun Belt.

Scout.com has UNT ranked in a tie for No. 116 nationally, last in Texas and ahead of only Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt (Scout didn't include Western Kentucky in its rankings).

UNT will depend on its incoming class to make a big impact, and it could very well exceed expectations. It had better because the expectations are not very high this year.

I think that though this class didn't sparkle in the rankings, it addressed a lot of need. I am not too worried about the rankings, since they don't take need into account. Hypothetically, we could have signed the nation's best fullback and tight end and had a higher rated class, but it wouldn't have done much to address the team needs.

I quote Brett Vito:

"The good:

When you consider what UNT had to work with and what it needed, its 2009 class is a very good one. The Mean Green got JC help on defense, or at least it looks that way on paper. UNT landed two defensive tackles, including Shavod Atkinson, a good prospect at cornerback in Ira Smith and a defensive end who can help in John Weber.

UNT also landed some good high school prospects, including wide receiver Daniel Mayberry and linebacker Daniel Prior.

And as a bonus, UNT addressed its wide receiver problems with two good junior college prospects."

Maybe UNT will have a season for the record books -- somehow going 10-2, with losses to only Alabama and a shocking 1 point defeat by WKU. These "experts" will mistakenly overrate the 2010 football recruits and we will once again see how useless 'expert opinions' are. Aside from the 1 in 100,000 supertalent athelete, these rankings are completely bogus.

But as you said, Brett, it is the dead of summer -- the time where speculation runs rampant.

It never ceases to amaze me that we as North Texas fans will trumpet every person willing to say one of our recruits is something special...and then downplay every person who says a recruit is marginal. It's true, the "experts" do miss on a few diamonds in the rough. By in large, though, they're able to charge subscription fees for a reason.
